Proauthorism

In Practice

How Proauthorism works when you sit down to make something.

Honest sources

Artificial Intelligence works with whatever it is given. This gives you control, but also responsibility.

A Proauthorist feeds in only work they have the right to use: their own, work in the public domain, or work they have permission to use.

It is against the tenets of Proauthorism to feed off other people’s work without their permission.

Set the rules at the start. Tell the Artificial Intelligence what it may draw on, what it may not, and what part it is to play. Clear instructions mean both partners understand the boundaries before the work begins.

The human holds the pen

Collaboration does not mean surrendering the work for Artificial Intelligence to blindly generate. It means deciding clearly, at the outset, what each partner does.

It is an unusual partnership. One partner knows what the work is for and answers for it. The other can offer more ideas, faster, than any human collaborator, but does not answer for the final result.

Not every Proauthorist will draw the line in the same place. One writer may keep the prose entirely for themselves and use Artificial Intelligence only for structure and checking. Another may let it draft, then direct, cut and rewrite until the work says what they mean. A composer may let it generate sounds. What matters is that the line is drawn deliberately, by the human, and declared honestly.

This website was made that way: written in conversation with Artificial Intelligence, then directed, questioned and rewritten, line by line, by its founder. Every final decision was his.

That is why every collaborative work must carry a declaration. The audience is told exactly how the work was made, so there is nothing to suspect and nothing to uncover.

When in doubt, declare

You do not need to record every exchange or the minutiae of the conversation. The declaration is there to describe how the work was made, not each contribution along the way.

If you are unsure whether something counts, declare it.
